Looking at buying a reman carb for my 292, and I noticed something odd, that Holley specs the same reman carb number for a variety of I-6's.

Arent they different in jetting? Do they come with all the jets, and I install the ones for my application?

I have fairly poor fuel mileage, weeping around the top cover and less than stellar engine idling and performance, I'd like to fix these issues. Any helpful suggestions?

The remans group them all together. The 292 original carb has larger throats & is jetted different. These are easy to put a kit in yourself. About half the remans are not any good. If you go that route DON'T turn in your old carb till you are satisfied with the new one.

I dont intend to turn in my old carb at all, should I buy a reman.

I thought there was something funny with those multiple applications. If I buy, I will nit pick the new one before paying.

How the heck do they get away with selling the wrong part? Amazing.

Most rebuilders think that if a carb will bolt on, and most of the hardware hooks up, it's good to go. Yes, the engine will run, sort of, but it will take a shop full of sophisticated test equipment to get it even close to right. I've seen different Rochester carburetor part numbers, and different jetting, power valve springs, metering rods, etc., with nothing more than a rear end ratio change, or a difference in compression ratio on the same size engine. The worst carburetor in the world is one that doesn't fit the application.

I'm with ya, bud!

Thing is, I'm not so sure the carb I presently have is correct itself...power seems a bit anemic, likes a touch of choke, doesnt idle well.

Just got an email back from Holley. I had asked about the specified carburetor fitting 3 very different engines and about jetting. They responded that their carb would be correct if I ordered for my application.

I told them carburetors are NOT like tube socks, one size does not fit all.

Good comment! What year engine are you working with, and is it in its original-equipment application? I've got factory service manuals and Motor and Mitchell repair manuals dating back into the mid-60's. If you know the year and model of the original setup, I can probably cross-reference it to a specific carburetor part number, or at least a representative range of numbers.

Hmmm, just went to Auto Zone website, they spec the same reman carb for the 292 and 230...

Surely there must be a way to get the correct carb for my 292?

Summit Racing had a nice ebay price, so I asked them to measure the throat. No such luck, probably drop shipped direct from Holley, and they invited me to send my carb to Holley.

Not likely.

After 47+ years of that carb design and the known differences within the Rochester B series, how in the **** do you run a business where getting a carb boils down to dumb luck?

I will never purchase from a company of imbeciles.

Anyone know of a carb rebuilder who has their feces consolidated into one woven textile foot covering?

WHAT YEAR IS THE ENGINE? Most of the 292's did not run the Rochester B, so that's your first problem. They never ran a Holley, to the best of my knowledge. The manual I'm looking at right now lists the Rochester Monojet M or MV series as being original equipment on a 292 from 1974 to 1983. If you will simply figure out an approximate year, I will do my best to give you a list of appropriate carburetor numbers for your application.

Or, you can keep griping. Your choice.

I see a lot of reman carbs listed as 230, 250, 292 for the same part number.

I do know the throat for a 292 carb should measure 1 3/4"
230 and 250 will be smaller.

It is a 1963 292 in a Grumman Kurbmaster.

Just for fun, I kept looking, ended up at www.rockauto.com
Guess what? Their rebuilt carbs from Autoline show a different part number for the 292 and 230 carbs... and an excellent price {$123.79 + shipping, includes a $30 core}

Guess Autoline was able to figure out the differences Holley reman ignores!

Oh, the Rochester number is 7023013, I have the manual. Sorry for being displeased that a company would sell me a carb they werent sure was right for my application...silly me.

The model B was used from 63 to 67 on the 292 & 230-250. The 292 had a larger bore. They are very rare.

Ob1,

Looks like your Rochester B # is correct for a 63 292 engine.

Have you tried
http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/History.htm

No need to "nitpick" there because he is the carbking.

Done ordered from Rock Auto. I was talking to the phone rep about measuring and he was prepared to call the warehouse and have it done when I saw the different P/N listed for the 230 motor, that was good enough for me. Price {carb+core+ship} was $133 and change.
