I stumbled upon a guy parting out a '51 Chevy 1/2-ton today. I bought a complete under bed spare tire mounting assembly including the cross-braces for $20. I assumed this assembly was stock for my '49 because it is the same as the assembly shown in the '47 to '54 Factory Assembly Manual. Later I learned that this assembly is not original for a '49.

Will this assembly fit my '49 frame? Can the original parts for a '49 be purchased from repo vendors? How hard are these parts to find? I would like to stay with original equipment, but if the original stuff is not available, I might just install the '51 assembly in my '49. Thanks.

My 49' underbed carrier slides into an angled channel that runs from front to back centered at the rear of the truck. I actually have this on two trucks. It is held by a j-bolt hook at the rear to the bed cross bar for easy access. The later carrier (post 49') switched to a bar that runs across left to right and is hung by large bolts on each side of the frame behind the rear axle.

Maybe that is what you bought.

Yes, that's correct. Apparently I bought the 1950+ version. My '49 has the angled channel running front to back, but I don't have the J-hook or the steel support bracket that holds the tire. Are the J-hook and support brackets available from on-line vendors? If not, I guess I will install the 1950+ version.

Wrong!!! 1950 was the last year on the slider type carrier. 1951 and up on the cross strap type.

Thanks for the information. I said 1950+ because I didn't know what year the change was made, or whether there was potentially different assemblies installed at different manufacturing locations. The Factory Assembly Manual only shows the latter model.

same here, I just meant that it came some time after 1949, not necessarily 1950. (Check out Denny's pics, he done some great work BTW)
