I have a '54 1/2T and want to remove the rearend. I need to drop the backs of the rear springs to get the rearend out.
How does the shackle come apart? Is it just removing the grease fittings and removing the center carridge bolt and slipping off the shackle end caps?

Thanks

You got it. remove all grease fittings first, then remove the middle bolt. when we did it we just got a hammer and a piece of wood and knocked the shackle sides off. but when you do this try to take pressure off the rear-end but do not actually make space between the tires and floor. if you plan on putting in new threaded sleeves in then good luck, lots of hammer time there. I hped this helped

Why not leave the springs intact, put it up on stands, remove the ubolts, brake line, shocks, and drive shaft. Then with help of a friend or jack, jack the rearend up, slide it sideways until the brake drum clears the spring, let it down slide it back so the drum now goes under the spring, until the other drum clears the other spring. Then lower the rearend to the floor and slide it the rest of the way out.

Thanks for the information, I'll take a second look at pulling the driveshaft. I thought it is a big job to remove the torque tube driveshaft from the rearend.

Thanks again.

not sure if the 54 is the same as my 57, but i had to give my shackles a little rap with an air chisel to get them off the tapered shaft.
