On my 1948 chev 3600 I have both rear wheels off the ground and can turn passenger side fairly easy. The drivers side turn backwards hard but not forwards.I believe the brake is not stuck. Is there anybody that this has happend to before or any suggestions.Is this normal?

Definetly not normal. It should be the same on both sides, and trun the samd either direction. It sounds like there's an issue in the left side brake, perhaps a broken spring or worn link allowing a shoe to wedge in the drum when turning the wheel backward. Best bet will be to remove the drum and see what's going on inside.

I will check that in the morning, i did have the drum off once and thought everthing looked good but maybe I missed something.Do you think it could be a more serious problem with the axel? When I turn passenger side backwards the drivers side also turns backward, but not forwards. Thanks

What happens when you leave it in gear and turn the passenger's side? It sounds like you might have a modified differential in there.

I have not tried that. Never heard of a modified differential could you expand on that a bit.

I think what he's meaning is that perhaps a po has installed a locking differential, like a No-Spin, in it.

When you said that you turn the passenger's side backwards and it causes the driver's side to turn backwartds at the same time, this is something that will only happen with a limited slip or some other type of differential. If this is the case and you put it in gear, you probably won't be able to turn it at all. On a normal differential, the wheel on the opposite side will turn the other way.

I will try to do that in the morning as my truck is at my shop which is some distance from my home. Would it be fair to think that it is a minor problem since both wheels do turn backwards.

I think it would mean that someone has installed a different differential that may actually be an upgrade of sorts.

I think you have a brake cable that is hanging up or the emerg. brake is adjusted up too tight.

Problem solved I took off the drum and cleaned up the inside and now it turns. The truck sat for some time and I guess it just kinda cruded up. Stupid Me, Thanks for all the help I do appreciate it.
