The engine runs and it blows through the radiator and blows all the antifreeze out. What would cause this? Oil shows no sign of contamination,#1 cyllinder seems to have less compression, as how it sounds when you turn it over. | | |
#61715 06/12/2006 9:20 PM | Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2006 Posts: 586 | Take it to a good radiator or general repair shop and have them do a dye test on the cooling system.It doesn't take long and will tell you if you have combustion gases leaking into the cooling system.The dye will change color.I have the dye kit but Chillicothe MO is a bit far from me.

#61716 06/12/2006 10:24 PM | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 50 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 50 | A possible cause would be a blown head gasket where pressure from the piston coming up on the compression stroke is leaking into the cooling system, pusing the coolent out.
I would start with a compression test and verify if it is the #1 cylinder that is lacking compression and how much it is leaking. Next a cylinder leakage test could be done by putting compressed air into the combustion chamber of the #1 cylinder. Make sure the cylinder being tested is at Top Dead Center on the Compression Stroke.
Look inside the radiator for bubbles. | | |

Has the engine been over heated? Not had much luck with finding just a blown gasket, don't know if it'e just my luck or what. Keep us posted. | | |

The pump can suck air in past the seals even though it never leaks water. Check it for wobble or end play. Running the engine without the fan belt on would be one way to confirm or reject this diagnosis, but may not work if the problem isn't immediate on starting the engine. | | |
