Hi All-

I've got a 1/2 ton 1953 frame, (which uses the two big bolts in front and the two shackles in back to mount the cab) and am considering using a 49 cab (don't know if it's an early or late 49) in my restoration. The particular 49 cab is in a different city, so I can't examine it to determine the nature and extent of the difference if in fact it is an early 49.

Can anybody give me an idea of how the early 49 three point mount differs from the late 49 four point mount, and what my prospect is for converting (if it is an early 49 cab) it to the four point mount?

Mega bonus points for any pictures of the pre-49 three point mount system!

Thanks guys! -Warren

Squarenutz. I have the same thing.j

You can drill the holes for the 3 point 49 cab mount. No problem. The holes need to be oblong. The holes at the bottom of your 53 frame will allow you to get to the center mount of the cab. Unfortunately, I found that the 49 cab fit rigid on the frame in the conversion and I have the 48 frame so I am going with the 48 frame that the 48 cab came off of. If you cannot do what I have done, since you don't have the 49 frame you shouldn't have any problem modifying the mounting bolt holes on your 53 frame to make it all work.

I hope this helps.

Thank you Dennis-

Perhaps I should back up- I have never seen the three point mount system, so I have no idea what you're talking about. Where is the "center" mount? In front or back? Could someone at least describe what it looks like? Does the early 49 frame have a different cross member setup, or is it just differences in the holes?

Is drilling the frame for the center mount preferable to drilling holes in the cab for the four point mount?

I understand.

The front mounts of both cabs will be the same. I found the 48 cab mount holes to be just a little different than the 53. This could be remedied with a rat tail file.

The rear mounts on the 53 are two straps on each side of the frame.

The rear mount on the 49 (I assume it is the same as my 48) will be in the center of the crossmember under the back of your cab. It is kind of a swivel action mount. This crossmember going underneath your cab from side to side of the frame is drilled for this mount on the 48-49. You will have to mark and drill these holes on your 53 frame. This mount is bolted down on two places and on both sides of this swivel mount. The cab is also supported by two rubber bumpers on each sides at the back.

I hope this helps

The link sent by mapleleaf is great.

You may want to disregard my windy write-up.

Thanks mapleleaf and oldbluetruck-

The link and explanation were quite helpful. I guess bottom line is that the frame can be easily modified to fit either mount, so no fear!

Thanks a bunch, that really helps! -Warren (squarenutz)
