For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 10 | Hi, Just bought a 1951 Chevy 6100 dump truck. It's 100 miles from home and has no brakes. I've got a guy scheduled to haul my new project but he'd like to know what it weighs. Old owner never weighed it and I've looked all over the web for the spec but no luck so far. Anybody out there have the info stashed somewhere in an old GM manual? The GVW is 16K but I'd like to know the curb weight. Some states require a weight slip to register a truck like that and I've seen scale weight on the registration papers. Its possible it was weighed before the guy you're getting it from purchased it and that weight is listed on the registration.
Otherwise Chevy says a 6103 weighs about 4700 pounds probably more before you add a bed. GM didn't make the dump bed and hoist and unless you can identify a manufacturer and get a weight from them weighing the truck is the best bet.
If I were guessing I'd put it at upwards of 7000 pounds assuming its a heavy steel dump bed and a big hoist to dump it. If he is putting it on a trailer and the trailer isn't a tandem axle with 8-lug wheels or maybe a lowboy type trailer, its going to be too heavy.

Title doesn't show it. Farm truck, hadn't been registered for years.
The bed was made by Penn. Couldn't find much info on them either. As you can see from my pictures, it looks like a pretty heavy bed.
The transport guy has hauled a number of old trucks so he's pretty confident he'll be under the load max. He can haul up to 10K lbs on his trailer so I think with the 5K lb cab and 3k lb bed he should be ok. BTW - 51 Ashton, I believe the original color on my truck was also green. I'm hoping that front tag is still on the truck when it gets delivered. Little things like that have a tendency to "walk" away. Thanks again. | | | | | Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 457 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Apr 2007 Posts: 457 | My '50 6100 dump is 7,103 lbs. Your bed looks a little heavier, but it should be under 7,500.
Good luck, George | | | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 10 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 10 | Great, thanks George. Looks like 7-7 1/2K lbs is where mine should come in. | | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,549 | That's a nice looking dump truck ! | | | | | Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 56 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Jun 2005 Posts: 56 | man what a great looking truck, best of luck

Assuming that this is a 10ga. body with an underbody hoist of approx 7'x15" then I would make an educated guesstimate (SWAG) that it weights about 2300 lbs +/-. add 450-500 more if 8ga. construction.
Very cool old Chevy, I love it. | | | | | | Doms48 Unregistered | | Doms48 Unregistered | That is a serious looking dump truck! I'd be thinking you'd want a dual wheeled tandem axle float...like they use for backhoes. I have a '53 6400 two ton truck with a 14' flat dump bed. I've rolled her over a few scales and she weighs 7300 lbs. I'd say for your truck that would be a minimum weight. Hope this helps.
