I have a 40 Chev. 1/2t pu. It came with the original 216, but the air cleaner is a 6 1/2 dia, 3 1/2 high paper element type. In the front is an air dam with the word "FRONT" stamped on it. I have pictures, but don't know how to put them on here or link them. If someone can help me on how to load the pictures, I'm sure it will help identify the air cleaner. I would like to find another one. Thanks.

Air Cleaner

If that is the correct cleaner for your 41, then I guess it could be the original cleaner for my 40, except for the element. I would like to find another one in case I put dual carbs on in the future.

A reproduction - 5th item from the bottom.

Dexter, this is the air filter/spark arrester from a 1950, 216 but I think they were the same regular production item from 1932 on up.

You should see a few pictures of the paper element next to the original one. Jon’s filter looks to be copper some were aluminum mesh.
Is there a number on the filter that you have in yours’ (usually embossed into the rubber)? It looks to be a very good fit for that unit

Thanks for the info. I thought all the early air cleaners were oil bath. I guess I was wrong. I had a 50 PU but don't remember what the air cleaner looked like (old age) That was a few years ago. Guess I need to dig out my pictures. The filter I have has no number on it. I have to push hard to get the threads through the lid. It is a little wide. It needs shaved a little around the rubber edge so it will fit inside the lid better. Thanks everyone for your help.

Are you looking for an original-style element, or a more modern replacement element, or an air cleaner unit that matches yours? Jim Carter sells an original-style reproduction element.

Depending on the carburetor you have, JC might have a matching reproduction unit or used unit. If you call them, ask for Mike (OlTrucks here on Stovebolt.com).

I would like to find a used air cleaner that matches the one I have. The correct element doesn't mean much to me. I was just answering Denny Graham's question about the filter I have. I only want one for in the future if I end up putting a dual carb set up on. I think two of these will clear side by side. So I am looking for a "cheap one". It doesn't look like that is possible. I don't know why since they were used on so many years, there should be plenty of them out there? I'm not into show cars anymore. Too much cost and tired of "experts" at car shows telling me what to do. I junked all of my trophies years ago. I just like to drive them and work on them. Thanks for the contact info. 10 years ago those old-style units could be bought used for $10-$15. Now they sometimes sell for $50+ on eBay.

Try a Want Ad in the Swap Meet.

It seems strange that people would pay over $50 for a used air cleaner on Ebay when Jim Carter sells new repops for $64.50. I guess there is some difference that a purist would want to stay original.

Oh Dexter, you just haven't bought enough reproduction parts yet.

I know there is some bad stuff out there. I used to be into restoring GTO's. It was always better to get NOS if possible. I just don't get into that exacting stuff anymore, but I do want it to fit and look good!
