well not sure of all the mods but i do know if its a vortec or there about the waterpump has to be changed out or you have to keep the serpintine belt system as it spins the waterpump in reverse of the old belt drive far as the carb if your going to use a different manifold you will have to get a vortec specific ones vortec manifold bolts are not angled

A '96 what V-8? I probably don't know the complete answer to your question, but I know it starts with knowing what V-8 you're dealing with.

Assuming its a LS type Chevy I believe you can get kits from Jegs and similar vendors to make the swap. You end up changing a lot of parts and while you might simplify the wiring you loose the advantages the advanced engine management brings.

It's true. I really don't do anything but browse the Internet looking for trouble...

LS did not start until 97 so most likely be a LT1 but the same holds true about the belt.
But manifold, fuel pump and carb for sure. That will set you back about$700-$800 ...you might want to look into keeping it injected and just get the PCM and using it

Like OldSub says, need to know what the original application was. There were several different V8s in '96. There was the basic TPI 350, sued in Caprices, the LT1 and LT4 350 (Corvette, Impapla SS, Camaro), LT1 based 265 (Caprice economy option, was also available as crate engine), and the Vortec engine used in trucks, which was built as a 305 and a 350. Each is different, and requires different parts to swap to a carb. At minimum, you're looking at an intake and dizzy, possibly a cam swap, too. With the LT engines, you have to deal with the lack of a conventional distributor, which can get $$$. Crate versions of the LT4 engine can take a conventional GM distributor in the standard location, I'm not sure about the production version of that engine.
