guys,
a friend just purchased a 1960 Edsel (i know, non Chevy, yuk), that has a brand new Holley 2bbl card on it. we are trying to figure out what CFM it is and called 2 local speed shops who couldn't tell us.
i have 3 sets of numbers we found on the carb.
#1 on the air horn is, 6R 1919 B
#2 on the throttle base plate is, 68653
#3 on the metering block is 6392

both speed shops said with those numbers they cant tell, and that if it was a direct ford replacement they will have different part numbers.
just curious if anyone can tell me what size it has ? we are trying to figure out if it is under-carb'd. the speed shops said they only make 350cfm and 500cfm 2bbl carbs.

thanks much.

I'm not any help on those numbers you list. I have used a number of Holley 2 bbl carb on dirt race cars. The Y block in your friends car should run with either the 350 or 500 cfm carb. Check the float level first. Then you can always tweak the jet size to make it run better. Good Luck Don

I play with Y-Blocks about as much as I do GMC. Does it run good or does it hesitate on acceleration? If hesitates, it could be over carbed. They used the 4 bolt Holley 2 bbl on the FE engines with a lot more displacement. You would probably find more answers over here. http://www.y-blocksforever.com/forums/Default.aspx

yes, the float level was off, and when we went to adjust, the little paper washers leaked, went and got the last set the auto parts store had, adjusted again, but not enough, and we didnt want to adjust again, maybe screwing up the little round gaskets again. we will ait until he gets more, then get the floats correct.
it kinf of hesitates off the line, and takes a while to get up to speed. to me it seems under carb'd, starving for fuel, because i would think if it were over carb'd you would be able to smell it in the exhaust of see it. it does not smoke at all.
my 57 was just a little over jetted and i could smell it.

so i am wondering if it has a 350cfm and it needs a 500cfm, but cant do anything until i find out what size it now has on it.

also, i thought holley sold white feflon float adjusting little washers, but horsepower sales says no. any of you knwo about that ? i swear back in the day, 70's early 80's i had a set on some of my cars.

All the Holley floats I've ever seen adjust by a nut on top of the float chamber, no need to take the bowl off. Just loosen the screw above the fuel inlet fitting, and turn the nut under it right or left to raise or lower the float level. Clockwise raises the level, CCW lowers it. The plug in the side of the float bowl is removed to watch the fuel level, and it's right when the fuel just barely trickles out of the open hole. I've used a 350 CFM Holley successfully on a 358 cubic inch Chevy engine up to 6,000 RPM on a round track engine, so the 500 might be a little over-carbed unless you're racing.

thanks jerry.
yes, we were adjusting the floats as you described, as i have done that about 1000 times in the past 30 years. we couldnt get far because of a leaky paper gasket on that nut and screw. we got a new set, their last one, and got it closer, but were affraid to go further in case it leaked again. we will adjust it until the gas just trickles out when we get new gaskets.

ok, so i guess a 350cfm wouldnt be too small huh ?

thanks very much for all your input.

IM me your snail mail address- - - - -I've got a couple hundred of those gaskets in the old round track carb tuning kit, along with maybe 50 extra jets of various sizes. If you'll tell me the jet number that's in it now, I'll see if I can scavenge up a couple of sizes richer or leaner to send along with the gaskets. On a 292 engine, you should be able to get at least 5,000 RPM even with a stock exhaust system. The "list" number on the air horn for a 350 CFM Holley is 7448.

jerry, i will PM you with my address. greatly appreciated if you dont mind giving up a few sets of the gaskets, but for now my buddy dont want to dig into it farther. he just wants to adjust the floats once we get new gaskets for the lock nut on the top of the bowl.
so you dont have to worry about sending me any jets, but man, i really appreciate the offer.
my buddy is not a car guy, and gets scared when talking about taking the carb apart. LOL.

it is a completely stock engine with dual exhaust. feels like its about half powered when taking off from a dead start, but dont smoke at all out the pipes. and dont smell at all like any raw unburnt fuel.

pm sent..
