| | | | Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 7 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Jan 2010 Posts: 7 | Hi Guys I have a 65 fleetside and the motor has been changed too a 350... have been thru a couple of starters already and have had too shim them... seems the shims that come with the starter are not working just right any suggestions?... Its hard too get the starter in and out because of the headers.

Sometimes rebuilders install the incorrect nose and they don't fit right. Check the teeth on the ring gear as they could be damaged and be contributing to the problem. Also some headers cause starters to overheat, you may need to install some kind of insulation material if this is the problem.

The HD starter has 2 terms. comeing out of the starter that connect to the selinoid. It will have a spacer between these terms. & selinoid. You may need a sheild over the selinoid &/or the starter. A lot of guys use those small gear reduction starters with headers. I've never used one but the say they are stout.
