I have a 51 Chevy Fleetline with a 235 and powerglide transmission. It ran fine during the fall, then it sat in december. I drove it last week and I had to leave the manual choke on a bit (it was like 30F outside) When I pushed the choke in, it would die. Even with the choke out a bit, the car ran a bit rough. Is this normal? Anything I can do? Should I rebuild the carb? This carb does not have the line that runs from the exhaust manifold to the carb.

sounds like it might be carb icing - gas tank condensation putting water in the line? too low a thermostat? [I used a 180 in my 235] might try some canvas or even cardboard in front of the rad

It sounds like you've got a little condensation in the gasoline. A couple of bottles of Dri-gas or just a quart of Methanol from any home improvement store in the gas tank will absorb the water and probably make it run a little better. If that doesn't help, do the routine tuneup stuff- - - -check the condition of the points, plugs, timing, etc.

We had our first cold spell this past week here in south central Texas and I've heard a lot of complaints like that from people who have been saving a few pennies by buying E10. I don't know if their complaints have any legs, but it has been good for my business any way.

Is there anywhere in Texas where you can get gas without the ethanol? I've been all over and I haven't found any yet. But my vehicles seem to do fine on it.

I thought if you used the E10 you didn't have problems with moisture condensation. It has alcohol in it. Isn't that what the gas treatments are primarily?

I don't use E10 myself, can never get as much mileage with it

I remember this back when I had a 70 opel Kadett L. She cranked and cranked and cranked in the cold winters of Michigan. On the last turn of the battery she would pop on one cylinder. Eventually, all four would go.

I feel this way when I started up the 55 last weekend.

Then I ran into the house to keep warm

AAAAAHHHHHH. Fond memories

Crappyappleton, I am still able to get clear gasoline, but probably not for long. What I have been reading is that the alcohol absorbs the moisture and then when it gets into the carb the water separates back out and you have moisture in the carb. In preparation of having to sell E10 I have already stockpiled a large supply of filters for my dispensers. Some of my competitors are changing their filters almost daily and pumping their storage tanks weekly.
