Hi,
New to the forums and to this type of truck. I was given what I believe to be a 1954 GMC Hydramatic 100, 5 window deluxe model pickup. The numbers from the engine block I found are: E248219747, On the intake manifold the number is 2194817. The truck does not have a carburetor, probably removed by prior owner some years back. I would like to try to get it running, but need a carb for it. From looking on various websites I believe it may need a Zenith carb. I have a long retired mechanic who will help me out with this project and he says various models of carburetors will work. I hope someone here can help me out with a website or have ideas what may fit it. I will be active in this forum as things progress with the truck.

autozone has a rochester 1bbl in their computer that will work. Just punch in chevy in the search instead of gmc. Use the chevy 235 engine size. Last time I looked for one they were completely out of stock. This is a warehouse item, not a regular store item.

NAPA also carries all the rochester carbs that came on these beasts and may, somewhere in the country, have a Zenith on a shelf they can order for you.

If all that fails, CARBKING probably can get you one. Check for his name on this site and e-mail him.

Zenith is what came on your truck. They really aren't hard to come by. It might take time. They show up on e-bay from time to time.

I'd suggest finding a Rochester off an old Chevy and putting a kit in it to use until you find a Zenith. Then get the Zenith professionally rebuilt.

The key word I believe some are missing from Mike's post is "hydramatic".

The carbs for the hydramatics are Zenith, but have a totally different calibration than those for the standard transmission (calibrated richer to compensate for the fluid coupling losses in the transmission). These carbs also have an automatic choke, so fairly easy to spot (if one were ever to find one).

How easy are they to find??? We have had about 5 times as many Duesenberg carburetors in the last 40 years as we have had G.M.C. hydramatics!

Opinion - probably the best replacement (assuming one has less than the patience of Job and the financing of Donald Trump) is to use one of the aftermarket Zenith BX series carbs (correct venturi for the 248 is 1 7/32 inch) with the electric automatic choke.

Jon.

Good carburetion is fuelish hot air
The most expensive carburetor is the wrong one you attempt to modify.

I have a Zenith carb from a 55 first series GMC 100 with hydramatic. The ID numbers on the carb are 2305720 and 11578. Expensive carb unless you're doing a restoration. PM if you're interested.

Hi Guys,
I'm gonna call CarbKing and see what is available. I just want to see about costs before I go much further with the project.
When I do get a chance I may start taking some pictures and posting them on the web. Truck will need work...lots of it, but structurely it seems in good shape. I still has that nice hood ornament, looks to have most of the emblems (Hydramatic 100) etc. Needs the wood bed, bumpers are broken, windows are cracked, but the corner glass are good. Motor looks to all be there except that carb. I'm going to poke around the barn where it came out of and see if it is laying around there somewhere.
Mike
