I pulled the yoke in preparation to change the pinion seal. I had a slow leak that was I was tired of. Unfortunately, I found a groove on the yoke.

Am I right in assuming that that grove would allow the gear oil to leak out? The pinion seal appears to be in good shape, so I don't think that is to blame.

What would have caused that groove to form in the first place?

Measure the diameter of the flange and get a speedi-sleeve for it. Most bearing supply places can provide a thin stainless repair sleeve to cover the groove, and the same size seal can be used. Always install a new seal whenever the relationship is disturbed.

The groove comes from years of rubbing. All yokes have a groove to some degree. That is why in the last 20 years or so seals have been developed that seal within themselves. They no longer rub on the yoke.
