I am looking at a T5, supposedly from a late model S-10, to be installed in my 46 one ton Chevy truck. Truck has a 54 235 engine and open driveline.

T-5 has serial number 1352 065 916. Can't find this number in my references.

Anyone know if this is, indeed a Chevy engine compatable with a 235, and 5th gear ratio?

Thanks.

this link has all your gearing answers. 235 or 250, 261, 292, it really does not matter.
you may have an issue w/ the 235 bellhousing.
do a search about that topic... there is LOTS of info once you learn to ask or do SEARCHES on topics. this has been covered many times over.
good luck & welcome to the bolt site

Hey Jones,

I think you've taken the number off the top of the case..this is NOT the number used to identify the application and corresponding gear ratios...my list of compatible T5's with the correct bolt pattern goes up to 1992 and the highest number from the TAG attached to the speedo side is 1352-000-262. Another thing to consider is that the newer boxes have an electronic speedo pickup which isn't compatable with an older mechanical speedo.

Just today I pulled my sm 420 and am installing an 85 T5 (mechanical speedo) in my 54-235-3100. It will need to make a couple minor modifications which you get from comparing your old transmission main shaft and throwout bearing support shaft with the T5 and adjusting accordingly. Mine will need to be trimmed 1/2" from mainshaft and 1-3/8 from throwout shaft. These measurements are specific to my application and are not necessarily the mods you will need to make....just some figures to give you a ballpark idea. Hope this helps!!!

On the T-5 I used (I don't know if they are all that way) it had meteric bolts holding the trans to the bellhousing. They are very close to the 1/2 inch bolts used on the old trucks and only take a small "clean up" to allow the 1/2 inch bolts to be used. The bolt pattern is exactly the same so it should bolt right up.

Be sure and stick the tranny into the bellhousing with the fly wheel,TOB, pilot bushing and clutch in place to see how much you need to trim-You may get lucky and not need to trim anything!

As far as the ratios in any particular t-5 go, the main numbers are the three that come after '1352'- in your case its the 065, if that is the number from the aluminum tag or green and white sticker.

According to the decoder I looked at, your t-5 came from an 84 mustang/capri with 5.0 v-8. If that is true, it probably won't bolt to your bellhousing. Count the splines on the input shaft- that ought to give you an idea if you've got a chevy.

here's a site that shows the application- there are others that show the gear ratio.

WHILE WERE ON THE SUBJECT.... has anyone tried fitting a Jeep t-5 to the stock clutch and bellhousing- They come with 1 1/8" 10 spline input shafts and have a much shorter tail shaft than the chevy version, so much so that it looks like you could almost bolt a 3 speed yoke up and use the factory torque tube.

Check it out:
