What engine would be stock for a 1950 chevy series 3800 1-ton?

Where is the engine code located?

Stock engine would have been a 216.

The engine serial number can be found stamped on a pad just aft of the distributor.

It's true that stock was a 216, but they did have a optional 235 upgrade.

We should be able to tell you what it is based on the serial number.

Boom, You know where to get the numbers off the engine, right?

For what it's worth, my '49 3800 came originally with the 235 (it's still in it).

The 235's correct for that period are the babbitted 235s (originally developed for the military trucks during the war), not full pressure like the later 235 that came out in '54.

Regards,
John

According to all of the Chevy literature, there was no 235 option for any conventional 3000 series AD trucks. 235's were standard in the 5000 and 6000 (and '50+ forward controls), but optional only in the 4000 series trucks.

I suppose if one knew the right people when ordering a truck, anything could have been possible. If John's '49 3800 really came with a 235 from the factory, I'd say it would have been very unusual and probably very rare.

Look for the engine serial number stamped on the flat pad rear of the distributor. For 1950 3800 (& 3600) the serial no. will start AHCA or AHCM depending on the engine plant. I also agree that the 216 was the only engine available for 3800 in 1950 - per the literature.

Curt,
That's what the first owner told me. The interesting thing was that the first winter (winter of '49/'50) the engine froze and they took it to the Big City Machine Shop (A local Bates) for a new crate motor -- a 216. When the 216 finally died in the early '90's, they went back to that same Bates for another engine. Amazingly, they had rebuilt the truck's original engine (the 235) but never sold it... until then! They put the original engine back into the truck about 47 years later!!!

How's that for luck?

grin
