Not that I'm planning on setting any records but I'm wondering what kind of loads have been hauled with this type vehicle. It's a 51 GMC, 1-ton, split-rim duals, overloads.

Who's got some good stories?

If it was originally sold in Mexico then how much it will haul is determined by how high the bed sides are. :p They just fill them up.

Now that I said that here is how the terms came to be;
the notation of One Ton or Two Ton goes back to the 20's and perhaps into the teens. It referred to the amount of weight that could be carried on the front axle. So I guess if you could get it on the truck and the weight distribution was within the "one ton" limit then you could haul it or so it would seem. This is a totally false presumption of course but that is what I've been told by the old timers who instructed me and I've been around trucks and equipment for over 40 years. Oddly enough, if you check it out and deduct the front end dry weight it still isn't too far off.

The original use of the term referred to the maximum recommended payload. For military trucks made in the 40s and 50s, the nominal designation referred to the "off-road" payload. Hence, a 2 1/2 ton truck had a payload rating of 5000 pounds off-road, or 10,000 pounds onroad.

I had a gross weight of 9,320 (truck and load) loaded with scrap iron on my 48 1-ton with single rear wheels grin

I've hauled over 2 tons in my 3/4 ton and wasn't even into the overload springs. But the front end better be in good shape. eek Even with new kingpins and tight rod ends, she likes to dance above 45 with that kind of load.
