I just bought a grain truck from a farmer and he was the second owner of this truck. I paid him, he gave me the title and I loaded it up drove home. But I cant find the vin any where on this truck. I know it isnt stolen because it came from an honest man and he really doesnt remember where it is. They changed engines when the 216 broke its crankshaft years ago and replaced it with a 235. Any help would be appreciated. Where do I look?

Is it 47 early, or 47 late?

If it is the art deco body style with headlights mounted on the fenders then the vin is under the hood on the passenger side cowl, along the side. If it is gone, you'll see a couple of holes there (diagnally oposed).

If it is 47 late with headlights mounted in the fronts of the fenders then I'm not certain, but I thought it was drivers door sill?? Not positive about those years.

Tomcoe, I found a plate but they have painted over it and the only numbers that I can make out are not even close to the title numbers. It is actually a forty six but titled forty seven. Ithink because of a strike in forty six. is there any other place they stamped the vin besides the plate on the cowl ? Thank you for helping.

Back then the motor serial number was often used to title a vehicle instead of a body or chassis number. You may need to run through your state's process to change the number to match the plate.

I would suggest trying some solvents on that plate to see if you can clean the paint off of it.

I just took the plate off and I am not sure that it is the same as the title. number5pw-a6837 is on the plate and doesnt come close to the title number. Like I said the original owner and second owner of this truck are about a mile from each other. Ther are very credible but I am stumped. the plate is smooth except for the stamped numbers in it at the bottom right corner. The way I take the plate it is from k.c. plant and a 2 ton.

That number is correct for a '46 2-ton.

You probably have the number from the long gone 216 on your title. Back then it was very common to use the motor number on the title instead of the body or chassis number.

Nothing to be confused or stumped by, just a challenge to navigate through the state paperwork issues.

Yes, as OldSub said, no need for stumpification. The numbers are supposed to be different. The ones you have there are identification numbers, plant, date, size etc. Check out 'Brads 41-47 trucks (just google it) and you will find the information you are looking for with regard to the id plate.

As for the title, just register it as it is on the title and don't worry about the vin number being on the truck unless they need it for some reason. Here in CA, you can have the Highway Patrol do a vehicle check and they place the number on the body of the vehicle physically...but again, I doubt you'll have to do that if you have the title...just register it into your name and have fun.

j c,

Post here the code that is on your title, and most likely someone will fill you in on the meaning of that code.
