Photos of preliminary installation will be posted on Photobucket. Link to follow.

Rick, Take a look at the attached. Let me know if you have any problems opening it. You should not.

Tom, Any comments.

At the stock transmission cross member, I'm at approx 6 inches (see attached.)

I have attached images of what others have done. They are not the ones from Langdon.

What are you installing as a motor and trans? I am installing a 292 inline chevy six with a V8 T-5 trans (38% over drive.)

thanks: my plan through the xmas season is to do the same. curious, what is the depth of your frame channel at the transmission mount. Mine is 6 1/2 inches. Wondering if the frames are the same on the 3/4 and 1 tons. Rick

Rick,

I'm in the process of locating them now. I hope to be done by the first of the year.

Keep in touch and I'll let you know where they end up.

Subject: Stovebolt engine mounts
Hello: I have a 1951 GMC 9430 that is a one ton. I have purchased the engine
mount kit from Langdon and have the same issue you mentioned and that is the
frame is different than the 1/2 ton. Did you find or did someone send you
info on where to mount the mounts. Any info would be helpful. Thanks Rick

Rick,

Can't believe it. I "think" I got them in the right place. The trick? An eight pound hammer. I was actually able to "wedge" them into the frame rails by driving (read "beating") them from where they would fit to where they needed to be. "If at first you don't succeed, find a bigger hammer."

The side to side or distance between the right and left frame mounts is still too close at 18-1/2 inches (I measure 19 inches even with the engine mounts in place on the block), and the horizontal plates of the frame mounts are all the way into the frame and hitting the radius of the bend inside the rail. I think a 45 ° chamfer on the edges of the mounts will fix that.

The vertical placement of the frame mounts "appear" to be close.

The battery in my camera is charging. I'll send you images ASAP.

I don't think this is what Tom had in mind, but it sure answerers the question of why they do not appear to fit.

Pix to follow.

Thanks Chip!

I picked up a 292 for my 51 1.5 ton and when I emailed Mr. Langdon about using his motor mount kit I got a non-specific response saying that they wouldn't work without modification. I'll be following this thread with interest.

Trimmed about 3/8 inch off the top and bottom flanges and bingo.
Now that the center to center dimension is OK, I'll drop the engine with the bell housing in and see what is what.
My only issue now is the transmission mounts. I found a custom polyurethane supplier here in southern Cal whom I plan to visit once I see where things line up.

Hello: discovered that my engine is a 230 cu inch, not a 250. Engine mounts are parallel on the 230 not offset. I'm going to have the offset stovebolt mount adapted. Took some time to figure out what was up. Will keep you updated. Rick

How are things going?
I'm stuck until I can trim the frame mounts to slide further into the frame rails to achieve the 19 inch side to side dimension.

question. the mounts that I see are the same as mine. the remainder of the hardware that I have to mount on the engine will cause the mounts to be offset. does this make sense??. I other words I'm going to have to stagger the frame mounts in order to install the engine. Did I get the wrong kit.??

I "dry fitted" the engine with bell housing (P/N 3815891) into the engine bay. I am using the bell housing mount holes relative to the stock transmission cross member as my reference point. This provides a clearance of approx 1/2" between the cylinder head and the fire wall.
As I have found damage to the trans cross member, I will remove it, repair it, reinstall it, and then find either stock or custom mounts to mount the bell housing to the cross member.
This will provide four mounting points (two on the engine and two on the bell housing), and allow me to cantilever the trans off the bell housing as it was originally.
Should be a nice, clean installation.

Not to dig up an old thread (I know some people frown on that), but I didn't want to start my own thread since it related so closely to this one.

Why would someone use a V-8 engine crossmember versus this clean install? I may be looking into putting a later model L6 (230/250, etc) into my 54... and I'm just doing my research before I decide anything (and mainly I'm just curious)
