I recently bought a '49 3600, with original parts, including the engine. The engine has the (apparently common) 'babbit rod knock' and recently started burning oil.

I'm a newbie, not mechanically savvy, and am torn between replacing it with a 235 or having it rebuilt.

The engine only has 43,000 miles on it and the rest of the truck is in very good shape. I'm weighing the pro's and con's of a 'numbers matching' truck with a stronger/more reliable engine. Any advice?

Lastly, what would one expect to pay for a good rebuild of the 216 or for a reliable (rebuilt) 235? Is there a significant value difference for 'numbers matching' if I restore the truck? Thank you in advance for any help.

+/- $3000 to rebuild 216. Under $500 for used 235, whether it's good or not, who knows, bout the same to rebuild it.

If the 216 only has 43K miles on it you likely don't need a major rebuild unless it was mistreated. Burning oil could be something as simple as valve seals or more severe like broken piston rings. Check the compression on all cylinders first and see how even they match to each cylinder. You may just need the cylinder head reconditioned. That price can vary between machine shops, but could be several hundred bucks, but way cheaper then a complete engine rebuild.

I think that everyone has a different definition of what a "overhaul" is and a "rebuild" is.

Rebuild to me means vat/flux block and head, replace all parts as needed. Getting ready to begin putting my 235 together that I swapped for the original 216 babitt poured bearing smoker beast. Drank more oil than the gas it used. My cost including new crank, pistons, cam and machine shop work is right @ $2500.00. If you are going to make a trailer queen show piece out of it to sell then worry about #'s matching. It's a truck not a 'Vette...I want to drive it, heck I want to drive that 'Vette too!

From what I have seen, a well done 235 replacement is a respected upgrade to these trucks. I don't think "numbers matching" is something that is considered with these AD trucks. With auctions like Barrett Jackson, the upgrade seems to bring more money than the original.

are you sure the odometer hasn't rolled over? maybe 143,000?

I love the idea of keeping and original truck original....but it does take some coin.
