guys,
do any of you have pictures of where the lower rocker panel air vent cable is attached ? probably right under the dash ?
also, any pics of how and where the cable attaches to the vent itself ?

it seems like more than just the cables are missing from my 57, and i would like to make them operable again, since now i use long skinny screw driver to open or close them.

Hey RATRODKING,
On my '55 and '56 the vent pulls were mounted under the dash and to the end of the vent flap was a upright holder that mounted to the top of the vent opening and locked the cable in place so you could open and shut the flap. I wish I had a pic. but could not come up with one.
Look on the upper inside trim of the vent opening and the holes may still be where you need to mount the brkt.(driv. and pass side)

little more Len - the knob ends were mounted in an 'L' shaped bracket, with the screwed down part having 2 screws and the knob leg being slightly V shaped - check under the center of the dash and you should find 2 pairs of 2 holes with weld nuts behind .... where the cable goes to the flap there will be holes in the kick panel nearby, originally with rubber grommets .... the cable sheath is captured just inside the opening and the inner cable attaches to the door by the rolled end slipping over a peg on the door .... too dark for pictures today

bill, i just looked through your album "Some TF series details", and the 3rd pic shows me where the knobs are located, under the dash under the radio.
i know the cables can be cut to length, and since i have a lot going on under my dash in that area, i am wondering if i could mount the knobs at the very ends of the dash, near the vents ?
what are your thoughts on that ?

also, stepping through your album, "57 Truck Accessories Reference", on page 199, chevrolet offered a utility tray for over the gas tank huh ? didnt know that.
i also see you made your own tank shelf. i did the same thing, but making mine out of some aluminum i had laying around, and covering it with some faux leather. here are some pics of mine.

should be able to change the cable mounting location, but if you have the pass side one all the way to that side, it'd make it harder to adjust 'on the go' - without leaning over enough to be in a bad position in case of emergency .... of course it'd still be better than a screw driver thru the grill

I might be able to get a pic of the vent door end setup tomorrow ... note that pic of the knob mounting shows them a bit off center cuz that truck [57] had some messed up holes from a PO, the right mount holes put them evenly spaced just outboard of the radio position, and a bit further out from that would work without having to cut them down

cool bill.
im not even sure why i'm messing with them, since down here in south florida, with the heat, they stay open 99% of the time, but when it gets cooler, like this weekend, and they are open, it gets a little chilly in the cab when they're open. LOL.

i just hope im not missing something on the vent doors that will prevent me from hooking them back up.

not able to do any pics at the moment, but if you have an assembly manual the whole works is shown well in sect 1 sheet 55.00 and 55.01 .... can't scan that right now either, no scanner up and running, been too distracted lately for this high tech life

no problem bill.
i dug into it again today and it actually looks like its all there on the vent door, and the little clip where the cable would mount to, etc.
now all i have to do is buy 2 cables and try mounting them where i want them.
thanks a bunch fro your help, and i did find the mounting holes right under my dash as you explained.

Just a quick note, Ratrodking. If you move the cable knobs/mounts out from the center, make sure that the turn isn't so tight that makes it super-hard to open and close the vents.

well guys, i ordered and received the cables, took off the vent covers, i can see where the outer spiral cable mounts near the door, but for the life of me cant figure out where and how the inner solid wire mounts to the door itself.
do any of you have a pic of how it mounts to the door ? i am stumped, and really cant figure out what to fab if i need to.
