Seems like I saw a topic about replacements for a Hyatt A11424 bearing which has long been obsolete. I have not been able to find the thread again. I recently discovered the front wheel bearings in my 53 GMC 2 ton had been run dry. I looked in a 1966 bearing substitution book and found to use a 17888 and 17830. That is a tapered roller bearing so the cup and cone have to be replaced together. I ordered the bearings. They came in a Timken box made in USA and fit perfect.

Really, Those two numbers look familiar. What does the seal ride on cause the 11424 has that inner extension the seal rides on which also provides the stop against the spindle support when you put the hub and drum assy. on.

When I replace a bearing with that extended seal surface with a tapered roller of the same dimensions, I just machine a steel seal ring that fits behind the bearing, and attach it to the spindle with red LocTite. It's a simple, permanent fix that eliminates the need for a scarce or nonexistent bearing.

The 17888 has the extended seal surface like the A11424. I got a seal from Carquest. My guys are over there several times a day. I will have to wait until I get my statement to find out what the Carquest number was. I had thought of cutting the seal surface off of the old bearing and putting a regular tapered bearing in, but the cup and cone are still in Timken's current books. My distributor had them drop shipped from Timken because he didn't have the cup on hand. He had the cones in stock. I didn't think it was worth the effort of making something.

I looked in notes and those two numbers are there only I seem to remember anyone I checked with didn't like those numbers.
Someone had suggested a 3383 Bower which I had ordered and found not to work.
I reordered and they came up with a re-boxed Hyatt bearing with the original A11424 number in a generic blue box.
Not that I need them now but it's nice to know that the 17888 and 17830 Timken numbers are a tapered roller bearing replacement for those original Hyatt barrel bearings.
Now the curious part... what did they cost ?

They are not cheap. I bought them from these guys. http://www.baumhydraulics.com/home.php I normally buy bearings from other Timken distributors who give me a batter discount, but these guys took the time to verify that all the measurement were correct while I measured with a caliper. The cup was $56.35 and the cone was $65.84 and $6.84 UPS from the Timken warehouse.

Holy underwear Batman, thats pricey, considering Carters sells the frt inner brg for 100 bucks.
I was attempting to find the brg cheaper which I did, but not by a lot.
