I have a 1962 Chevy 80 tractor that was purchased new by my father in the spring of '62. Someone awhile back did a poll on owners of similar trucks on this website. Do you own one and, if so, tell us about it.

This is a conventional cab. A little rust here and there. Roof mounted cold AC.(i'd like to change that). I love this truck. It needs a steering gear and other things. It's fun and a great "puller". I have a 1950 Hobbs 36 ft flat bed that I haul some stuff with. I found that parts are either scarce or very expnsive. This truck pulled a heavy load from Texas to northern Montana recently and performed great. 5 mi/gal Mert | | | | Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 'Bolter | 'Bolter Joined: Dec 2002 Posts: 2,538 | I owned a '65 Chevrolet L80 Holmes Wrecker, for a few years. Sold it 2 years ago. It was equipped with a 409 eng., 5 spd. tranny, & 23000lb. Eaton 2 spd. rear axle. Had full air brakes, & power steering. I also had a 1960 Chevy L80 tractor, with 348 eng., 5 spd. tranny, & 2 spd. rear, with full air brakes, & power steering. Your pics are great. Was the orange one on E-Bay ever? It looks familiar. I sold it to a tree service here in Burlington, it then was sold to someone in Florida. It could have been on ebay. I still have a '65 L60 Tanker, out in the country, but it a parts truck at best. | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 114 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: May 2008 Posts: 114 | Mert...
My father owned several 80 series Chevys in the early 60s till the mid 70s. They gave good service, considerably better than the Fords we had with the 391 V8...one sorry motor. We never had a Chevy with a roof mounted AC, would have been nice here in the hot humid south. Also our fuel mileage averaged 2 1/2 to 3 1/4 MPG on the tractor trailers, and this was running empty 50% of the time. You got great mileage on yours. I have a few pictures in my webshots posted below.
Hope to see some pics of your Chevy if available.

Had no money then. Quite a while ago. I'll get some pics together. My 36 foot flat bed is pretty heavy empty. It' a 1950. Can't imagine flathead's and six's pulling them then. I'm trying to bring up a pic of your 62. I'll keep on trying. Does your 62 have air brakes? Mert | | | | Joined: May 2008 Posts: 114 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: May 2008 Posts: 114 | I don't have any recent pictures of the '62 Chev. Its rusty and parked outside in our boneyard. No motor or trans. in it now, hope to one day restore it, but its gonna take a replaced cab, hood, etc. plus drive train components. It is a single axle tractor with full air brakes. There are several old pics of it in the 'early truck' section of my webshots, these are when it was new or one year old. All together we had 7 tractors that were Chev. 80 series from the years 1962 till 1965, of which half were tandem axle with the others being single axle, all had full air brakes and 409 V8s.

Put me in for 2 more C80s, both factory L40s but now small blocks, both dump trucks, one is 2 wheel drive 1965 and the other is 1966 Napco 4 wheel drive. The Napco truck I've been watching for almost 40 years and last week I was able to buy it. It was bought new by the local county road department. Also have 66 4x4 suburban, 64 K20 long narrow and 65 C30 factory motorhome. Will post pics as soon as my daughter shows me how. Long live the 456 trucks.
