I had some problems with my transmission hanging up in third, so I took the shifter box off of the steering column, cleaned out all of the old grease and took a good look at the guts of it. It appears to be pretty simple. From old forum posts, I see that this box is the cause of most 3 on the tree hanging up problems. The parts seems to be in real good shape; no chips, corners are square and the spring intact. My question: How do you tell if it's worn out? Are there some clearance measurements to check on the gates? The adjustement of the linkage rods on the outer arms seems to be very critical=I've found that even an eighth of an inch can make a difference. Is that everyone's experience? Any comments are appreciated.

It's been a long time since I built one but if the corners are worn you can built them up with weld. If the shaft is loose you can run the cover over sand paper to take up the slack.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.
