Cam someone with a 235 (1948) measure the bracket that holds the generator? I need to know where the two bolt holes are in relation to the front mounting ear. I have one with a alternator mounted on it and need to add a second ear to hold the back of the alternator or a very long bolt and spacer. I also need to know how long the bent ear is from center of the bolt hole to the main bracket.

I am just bending a "L" bracket to bolt to the OEM bracket and need the lengths.

Not exactly sure what you need. I have a 216 in my 40 with an alt. I have the front half of the L bracket and behind the alt. ear, I have another L bracket facing forward like the one in front of the alt, but shorter length and a bolt going thru the front bracket, alt ear and the L bracket just behind the ear. The rear L bracket sets on top of the longer front L bracket. If this makes sense at all, I can give you dimensions on what I have. I can email you a picture if that would help. I also have the gen. on a 59 235 complete with original bracket that I can get dimensions from it that helps? But it mounts on the block differently than a 216.

That makes perfect since to me! I am helping a fellow bolter out and would like to have a bracket bent before I head over to help. His alternator is now just held on with the front "L" of the original bracket so the alternator flops around a little and not very secure. I believe its a 1955 235 engine.

If you could measure from the inside edge of the front to the first and second mounting holes in the block, I could bend a whole new bracket and then weld the second "L" to it using the alternator as a spacer. I would need the measurement from the alternator mounting hole to the base of the bracket also, that way I would be close to the original hight and his new belt would still fit OK. What size holes are in the block?

I took dimensions off of the bracket on the 59. The mounting holes on the block looks the same as the 55 sitting next to it.
There are 3- 5/16" tapped holes in the block.The first one is 3/4 from the inside of the front bracket ear. The next is 1 5/16 from the first hole and the 3rd is 3 3/4 from the first hole. The bracket is 1/4 thick. From the gen./alt mounting hole to the inside of the bracket is 5/8 high. Add the 1/4 thickness and it is 7/8 to the bottom surface that bolts to the block. I tried to be as accurate as possible, but the gen. is still on the engine and the engine is sitting on a cradle on the floor so it was hard to measure. These dimensions should be very close though. The bolt spacing should be right on because the 55 has no bracket on it. I measured the holes in the block. I would think 3/8 clearance holes would be ok for the block mounting holes or even oversize would allow some adjustment. If you need more info or better descriptions let me know.
