I have been fighting several parts on my 250 to make them fit the way they should. In particular, I have been fussing with a power steering pump\alternator alignment. I have tried the old 250 alternator to block mount and one I had from a 230. Neither works.

I wanted to keep the original motor from the truck as it was my grandpas, and sent it out to have it remanufactured. I was told the block had a minor crack and they replaced it with another.

Now I'm starting to wonder if some of my alignment problems may be related to a GM, but not Chevy product. The casting number on the block is 3894256. I can't find that number anywhere, including Santuccis book.

Can any of you help?

I looked in my inline power manual and did not see any number that starts with 389 for a block there were numbers for heads that started with 389 but did not match the rest of the number.

I can't find that number either. It is marked GM. The stamping on the distributor pad is FO812EAH. That may mean something to someone.

I am going to be pulling the front clip off of my 67 this weekend. It will give me the ability to take some good detailed photos of the motor, a 250 if this would help you let me know and I will email you a few pictures.

That may help indeed. particulalry the shape of the block mouning bracket for the alternator.

Could you double check your numbers?

There were some 389xxxx block casting numbers according to various online lists, a couple for 250's and one for a 194. The closest I've found to 3894256 is 8994256, but that's for a 292.

The EAH suffix is a mystery, too. I have an extensive list of Chevy engine ID suffixes, and EAH does not appear on any inline 6 for cars thru '79 (the last year for a car inline) and trucks thru '83 (the penultimate year for truck inlines, excluding the 292's that continued on in certain trucks--I don't have '84 info). The closest is TAH, which is for a 250 from '73, '74, '78, or '80.

Someone on a Camaro forum posted an engine number with the EAH suffix, but his was a small block (327), and that suffix didn't "officially exist" for 327's either, though there was an EA.

I double checked the ones on the block today. I believe I had one number wrong. After sanding the paint lightly on the numbers it appears they are 3994256.
I'm going to lightly sand over the distributor pad in a few minutes.

Checked it...definitely a EAH on the end.

Is it possible that your first number is an 8 and not a 3? 8's and 3's can be hard to tell apart in castings. 8994256 is the number for Chev 64-77 292 as Xram53 has indicated. Go to casting #'s on www.inliners.org to check for yourself.

It's definitely not a 292. I WISH it was.
