There is a section about a foot or foot and a half long in front of the right rear wheel that needs to be repaired. The bottom flange of the rail is about 80% gone, the vertical portion is okay except at the very bottom the the top flange is good. It looks like water and salt layed in there and worked their magic. The rest of the frame is in excellent condition. How should this bad section be repaired? Is it best to weld flat stock over the bad portion on the bottom and side or is it better to cut that section of the frame out and look for a frame section? What do you think? Rick | | |

Weld in a patch, and grind the welds on the inside flat. Then weld a doubler on the inside of the frame, going a few inches past each end of the patch, if possible. I'm assuming this is in a straight section, not where the frame humps up to go over the rear end. If it's in the curve, the fix will work, but it's a lot harder to do. I would do the welding with a stick for best penetration.

Then make a piece from the proper guage metal and butt weld it with either a mig or stick weld, whichever you prefer. Good luck! | | |

I liked the idea of boxing it when I am done to give additional strength. I was suprised that no one said to make vertical cuts and cut out a section. I really didn't want to do that and I am happy no one advocated doing it! It is a 3/4 ton so I will mike the thickness and look for the necessary steel. Thanks Rick in VA | | |
