Can I use this gauge to help diagnose what my engine is doing or NOT doing correctly. Will it help me find issues w/ valves & valve springs, timing, air cleaner, head and manifold leaks?? The web site you point out gives some good information on reading the gauge. It is best to spend time reading the gauge on a good running truck first, so you know what a good normal condition is at idle, wide open throttle etc. Once you get used to the gauge you can find problems quickly and easily using the chart.
I have a vacuum gauge installed on the dash of my '59 which I look at all the time. You can even improve gas milage if when you drive you try to keep the needle in the 15-20 in.hg. range. Pontiac installed vacuum gauges in some of their cars in the '60s.
The vacuum gauge is installed using a rubber hose that you hook up to a vacuum port on the intake manifold. There is usually a port that will be right in the middle of the intake that will give a good average reading of all cylinders. | | |
