putting my '55 carrier back together with new bearings and all, but that new crush sleeve will not crush. i even put it in my 20t press, and after three tries, it only crushed by .013. it's supposed to be done with 300-400 #s. seriously, how would anyone be able to crush it in the carrier with wrenches? a 10' cheater with a 200 pounder on the other end? it's wall thickness is almost 2x the thickness of the original

To get the crush started, I use a 4 foot pipe wrench on the pinion flange, and a 3/4" drive socket and breaker bar with at least 3 feet of pipe over the handle. Let the pipe wrench rest on the floor, and pull down on the cheater. Once the sleeve starts to crush, it will get easier to move. A little NeverSeez on the thread and the face of the flat washer under the nut will keep it from galling. When the bearing gets close to touching the race, be VERY cautious that you don't overtighten anything. Once the sleeve gets crushed too far, it can't be stretched out again- - - -you have to buy another one and start over.

yeah, that'll be my next plan of attack if i can't find a sleeve with a thinner wall. but i'm puzzled as to why i can't even get it started in my press. and needing that much force spooks me regarding what might happen to the bearing race. maybe i received an oddball in my kit, bec even it's id was too small for the shaft, and i had to rat tail file it down. and consequently, once i got the .013 out of it, the id became smaller again and i had to file it again. which raises another bug; as it gets crushed on the shaft, it'll even get harder to crush bec of it's shrinking diameter
but on a good note, i drilled and tapped my crank for a damper bolt. and, i did it by hand with it in the block, thanks to some weird bit i found with some other 'inherited' bits. i've never seen a bit like this

you won't hurt the brg race. you may have not have been given the right sleeve. other possibilities is 1; you are missing a washer and you have run out of thread. you crossthreaded the nut. You do not have the poop to tighten it. tjere have been a lot of the sleeves crushed over the years so it in not impossible. to me it sounds as there is a reason that you have perhaps bottomed out on the thread. it could even be the wrong thickness of brg(right od & id, but wrong thickness? anything is possible)
It is more than likely something that you have missed and you have now looked at it to many times and now can't see what the problem is.
if you have a blow up of the assembly just go back and match part for part. if you have the old pieces, measure to make sure hat they are identical
sometimes you just have to give yourself some space and look at it tomrrow with a hang over or whatever and you will see what it is

Those usually fit loose on the shaft. You may have the wrong one. I always use a 3/4 in. drive impact. If you know someone that has one that would help.

oh, it's def not the same as the original. the original wall thickness is almost 1/2 of the new one. the original falls on the shaft, the new one had to be filed to go on at all. i checked with the supplier/same dimensions as his, and he checked with his supplier - no problems with a 3/4 impact. but i haven't even tried to crush it on the shaft yet bec when i saw the difference, i stopped right there. and in between three phone calls with the supplier, i put the sleeve, all by itself, in my 20ton press three different times, and all i could get it to crush was .013in. which of course meant that the id shrunk and it had to be filed again to get it to go on the shaft. the supplier said he doesn't know what to say to that, other than tie the carrier down to something solid, get a 3/4 socket and a 5' cheater and have at it. urgh!

Take the old sleeve and slip it over a old pinion or solid pipe and beat it a few times with a hammer, rotating as you work it. Most of the time it will expand them out a few thousands and then you can reuse it. If that fails, Napa sells replacement crush sleeves in the "Help" line of parts out on the floor displays. You might find one that would work.
