Should I still fuse in between the alt.and reg.in order to use my charge gauge?

The regulator for a generator is different from the regulator for an alternator. If your alternator is a modern gm alternator it would have a voltage regulator internally. You would have to wire it differently.

Even the old 10DN which uses a external regulator has no regulator terminal marked BATT. You must be using the term 'alternator' quite loosely. OH......I guess I didn't catch the drift of your question. As Tiny noted, that is the easiest way to tie into the existing system. IMHO, the alternator output itself isn't normally fused.
