There should be a 1/4"-20 x 2" screw in the clamp portion of the advance. That is what locks the dizzy down once base timing is set. The advance itself is locked to the block by the bolt in the slotted hole for the "octane selector" part of the advance.
Here's a pic from the manual.

there is no clamp, it is just the advance, the hole in which the distributor goes through, i know where it bolts to the block, but the advance has nothing the clamps it to the dizzy is what i m saying and I dont have that part

you will need the collar that clamps to the distributor like the photo above shows.Do you have one on your original distributor ? post an add in the parts wanted section of the stovebolt.

The pic on their site shows the advance just as I described it. Sounds like you got shorted on the part, as the clamp should be part of the advance. If they don't provide one with their replacemnt advance, you may have to re-use the original from your engine.

bill, when i rebuilt my 54 261 the collar did not come with the new advance. You have to use your old collar, maybe some suppliers sell it with the vacuum advance.

Destroyer47,i looked to see if i had one,i don't.
