Well, The saga continues......

After all the TLC I have given my truck, she just won't give me a break. I had her shipped from Great Lakes to my Father-in-Law's home to save some mileage on the ol' gal. Perfect trip, no problems, the guy was very gentle with her. I filled her up with gas, had the oil changed before the trip and topped off all the other fluids. My wife, again, driving her Toyota and I in the super, uber cool '61, cruising at a ripe 55 miles per hour, got the tunes cranked and then she (my truck) started to turn sour, then my wife started to turn sour. Luckily the dog wasn't around, cause I don't think he's fully recovered from the last episode (see my orginal posting in the gallery for background info ) Smoke, loss of power, not good signs.

I got off the highway, pulled into a parking lot and shut her down and let her cool off for about an hour. Turned her over, she started right up, but was making some horrible noises. The kind that make you cringe. I called my insurance company and they directed me to a service station about 2 miles up the road. I could have them pick it up at no charge since they are a full service facility or I could limp it over there and not have to wait the 3 hours for them to come and pick up my big red beauty. I opted to take the short jaunt to them. I got there without any major issues, she stalled out a few times, no oil pressure though. When I got to the service garage, their head mechanic came out, drooling over my truck and I asked him to look at her engine. He turned her over, and immediately told me that I threw a rod. He climbs underneath and says "Well, no exit wounds, but your bottom half of that engine is toast." He told me he could fix it, but would take 2 weeks and would have to order a new engine, He recommended a Jasper engine. I looked them up and they make a 235 inline 6 for $2,195.00.... Now my question(s) for y'all are:
- Should I spend the cash on a 235 and be on my way? or

- Spend a little more and get a 350 and a new tranny? What kind of work should I be expecting to be done if this is a "better" option?

just to let yawl know i got lucky many months ago and found a very good motor sitting in a junk yard recently rebuilt for a couple c notes

I pulled this engine from my pickup truck this past summer in good running condition. It may need a good clean up/tune up before going into a show car. It's ready to be used. I put on a new front clip and am upgrading to a 350 in my Chevy pickup. Right now this 235 is just taking up space in the garage when it could be in your car or truck. Please make me an offer. Shop around I bought a completly rebuilt 235 not just overhauled but completly redone for $200. There are alot of good motors out there for cheep.

It's probably a matter of prefrence also. Do you like the 6cyl or do you want to up grad if so now would be the time to do it.

Will, The real question seems to be whether you should turn this dilema, into an opportunity to justify replacing the 6 with an 8. Unfortunately, you are the only one that can answer that question. The way I see it, you need to decide what you really want to do with your truck. If you want a highway cruiser that can easily handle 70 to 80 mph speeds go with a V8. If you want something to just have fun with, whether for work or play, look for a good used 6. An inline 6 can handle highway speeds OK, but not quite as well as a V8 will. It also depends on how much you want to spend.
Obviously, a good used 6 will be much easier and less costly than switching to a V8. I think the inline 6's have more character, but that is just my opinion. You can buy far more trucks with V8's than you can with straight 6's. It all depends on what you really want.

so do you want a hot rod or a classic truck your choice

after the 350 then you need a better front end then what about the rear end then what about the wife is it ever going to end

I`m a inline 6 guy but for a daily driver I would prefer a 350 V8 with a TH 700R or at least any kind of overdrive.

Even here in Germany V8s are cheap engines.

Parts are also cheap and plentifull, if you need help every backyard mechanic can do it.

You will have better mileage and more speed and a happy wive

For $2,100 plus what that mechanic would charge you to install the re-manufactured 235 you can build a very nice chevy 350 at home and put it in yourself, and enjoy the process. As far as that goes, you could rebuild your 235 yourself and put it in for that same ammount, or less.

What other engine came with your 61? If you are going to replace the engine and keep it classic, try a 261- It'll bolt right in and will give you lots more torque and HP.

It came with the 6 in it, I thought about it hard last night and I believe I'm gonna keep it as original as possible, and then talk the wife into buying another to hot rod. Just gotta find the right angle.....

I have been shopping around and it ain't lookin' too pretty, but I am sure I can find another 235 to bolt in and get running again. I guess this is the time to redo the whole engine right, instead of the nickle and dime avenue I've been taking just to be able to drive her around town.
