I just (Monday) bought a 1959 Apache step-side. It was advertised as a 1/2 ton. When I went to get it the Spear on the side had a 32. I thought that half-tons were either 3100 or 31, making 3200 or 32 a 3/4 ton. The guy I bought truck from said, No, that Chevy stopped making 3100's in 1954 and all half tone's after that were designated 3200 or 32. I didn't really believe him, and now on this forum I'm seeing 1/2 tons with the 3100 designation. My question: What's the difference between a 3100, 31, 3200 and 32. Thanks.
Looking forward to starting work on the truck. It runs great, I drove it over 90 miles home. But it has a lot of body problems - rust through, dents, crinkles, etc.
Thanks for any enlightenment - Dan

3100's are half ton short bed - 3200's are half ton long bed

The only stupid question is the one not asked.

keep in mind that the 3200 has some unique parts. Specifically in the brake department. So be sure you order the correct parts when the time comes.

Thanks, I just discovered that while looking for parking brake cables, the front ones are different lengths for the 3100 and 3200.

Welcome Dan. The diameter of the hard lines for the brakes are also different from a 3100 except for the rear axle lines. I went back and forth with Inline Tube for a while on this until finally it was resolved and they sent me the correct lines. Okay, if 3100 is 1/2 ton short, and 3200 is 1/2 ton long, and 3600 is 3/4 ton what is 1 ton? I'm thinking 3800 but not sure. Thanx, GMC Freak

yes freak, 3800 is the 1 ton series ... and 03 [as in 3103] is the cab and chassis model, 04 is the pickup, 05 is a panel and 06 [barn doors] or 16 [clam gate] is the burb grin

That's good to know. I thought it was just the length that was different because of the different chassis lengths.

Mike; Just went to the link. Great thread! Learned that the difference in the length of the lines is not due to the chassis or bed lengths but different placement and angles of the lines. The lines for the shortbed are actuallt longer than the lines for the longbed (if I understood the post correctly). Thanks
