I have a Fram c4 Canister remote oil filter, That is taking a Wix 51006 filter. I noticed when cleaning this out the return hole is a very little one near the top of the center metal tube. Has any one enlarged this hole for more oil flow and if done would my full pressuer 1956 235ci engine be starved of engine oil or not?

Please advize, Gerry

That would be the main restriction for the bypass filter. It was designed that way so why would you want to change it?

remember that the oil making it to the filter is going through a hose that is about the same diameter- Then it pressurizes the oil filter canister- then goes through the filter and exits through that hole. It works fine that way- they were never meant to move a lot of volume- they were meant to keep the oil moving and at 15-45 psi- the reason the cartridge is so large is so that as the filter began to clog there was enough surface area to stop any possible restrictions that might starve the engine for oil. that is why there is a gap between the outer wall of the canister and the oil filter. the oil does not filter through the entire surface area just the least point of resistance- as it clogs that point moves.

I change my filter about every 3000 miles on the truck- I am anal and change my oil every 1000.

you would not get much benefit from enlarging the hole-
The hole where the oil leaves the pump to come to the filter and returns to the engine would not change in size- they are both 1/8" Female pipe thread- the orifice on those is roughly the same as on the hoses- so to really make a difference you would have to drill out those holes and re-tap them to a larger size- as well as the hoses and the fittings on the canister- so the enlarged exit hole in the filter would still hit a small hole as it leaves the filter and as it goes back into the engine. might get a little velocity increase, but they work fine as is.

You could be a little slow like me and hook the hoses up wrong so that the fill line goes in correctly but the return line comes out the drain rather than the return and nothing gets filtered for the first thousand miles until you figure it out in a homer simpson moment. smile

The oil gets filtered either way it flows, but the conventional wisdom is to make the outside of the filter media the "dirty" side, with "clean" oil coming out of the bottom of the filter canister. The orfice is there to control the flow of oil through the filter and prevent pressure loss to the rest of the engine. A bypass filter is in parallel to the lube oil flow, and the filter outlet just dumps back into the oil pan. If too much oil volume flows through the filter circuit, the bearings and other pressure-lubed parts get starved for oil pressure. Definitely DO NOT increase the size of the restrictor, and if you've got a tired old engine that's a bit short on oil pressure, it might be wise to make the hole in the filter outlet smaller. I use Holley carburetor main jets for that purpose, as I've got a box full of them for adjusting mixture on the race engines.

It's about halfway down the center standpipe, usually in line with the inlet fitting on the side of the canister. Try installing the cap and the rubber gasket without a filter element, turn the canister upside down, and pour a solvent like Mineral spirits into the bottom fitting. Then use air pressure to blow the solvent through the hole to make sure it's not clogged. It's very small and hard to see.
