I found a '51 and the guy says it is a 2.5 ton, what would the total weight be of the truck? Trying to decide wether I can go get it or need someone else to. Thanks

If it's a '51 Chevrolet, it would be a 2 ton. Need a few more specifics. Get the number from the ID plate in the driver door jamb. That number will tell if it's a 1 1/2 ton, 2 ton etc. Weight of a '51 Chevy 2 ton would be between 4500- 5000 lbs., in cab, & chassis form.

That's probably right but most time the truck will have some sort of bed and it adds a 1000 or 2000lbs. I think my long box 47' 2-ton weights around 7000 to 8000lbs. I know for sure my uncles truck weighs 5900lbs and it's a 97' chevy 1 ton with a 454 BB. So the old 2-ton has to weigh more than that.

Even a 52 Chevy would have been 2 ton at the most.
Was it not until 55 that Chevy had a larger than 2 ton truck??

The problem with hauling larger trucks is that they are to wide a tread to drive onto most bumper pull trailers. I have loaded them on a tilt car hauler I have by removing the outside dual and backing them on. But it is safer to haul them on a trailer with a deck above the tires and a goose neck. Of course my preferred method is on a flatbed behind a semi. Backing them on really doesn't get enough tongue weight to be safe. The actual difference between a 2 or 2 1/2 ton isn't that much. It is the heavier rear axle, 20" tires and and duals that make them weigh more than a pickup. And of course any bed will be heavy.

1956 was the first year Chevrolet had a larger than 2 ton truck offered.
