I'm at my wit's end. 1954 235 1.5 ton. I've completely rebuilt the ignition system. New coil, cap, rotor, points, condenser, wires, plugs. All new. It ran well for a bit, then I parked it for a couple months. then it wouldn't start. When I looked inside the distributor it had brass fillings and a groove cut in part of the cap contacts. I replaced cap and rotor.
I've checked all things. 12v in, points set correctly, all new parts. I can get no spark at the plugs and only a weak spark out of the secondary on the coil. I don't know where to turn now. HELP!
| | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | I would check for a bad bearing in the distributor the rotor should never be cutting into the cap that would also cause the points to "bounce" and You would not get any spark . take the cap off and grab the rotor and try and push it side to side and then crank the engine over with the starter and watch the rotor if there is ANY side play You need to rebuild the distributor ,or get a rebuilt one .

Would that issue affect the voltage from the secondary windings on the coil? | | | | | Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Jan 2009 Posts: 1,644 | Yes if the points are not closing and opening right You could have little or no spark to check Your sec. windings take the plug wire from the coil and take it off the center post of the cap put a plug on it so it goes from the coil to a plug ground the plug and than manualy close and open the points and see if You get spark if You get spark You coil is OK of course the key has to be on also.
