For helping keep this great
old truck web site
on the Internet for over 30 years! and not clogged down with Ads! Again, thanks! | | | | Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 4 New Guy | | New Guy Joined: Oct 2009 Posts: 4 | Ok I searched and looked at probabbly 100 or so "engine identification posts." For some reason none of the info seems to pertain to the engine I have. I was told it might be a chevy 235 261 250 or even a 292 inline?? The engine I have has a number which is pressed or stamped into the block on a flat surface back by the starter area passenger side. that number is VM440160AL. there are no other numbers cast or stamped on the passenger side of the engine that I could find!! Nothing behind or any where near the distributer. The push rod cover is a one piece design that is aprox 4" tallthe length of the block held on by 4 bolts. The distributer is located toward the front of the engine. The oil filter (a fram spin on)is located under the distributer. The dip stick is located on the drivers side of the engine. The valve or rocker cover has two center bolts holding it down. On each side of the block directly across from each other near the bottom there are three holes with raised castings connecting in a "V" pattern. close to the top rear hole On the passenger side there is a threaded plug. (looks like a dip stick could have been there or another sending unit?) On the drivers side directly under the "V" is a casting number of EPB 6015 H I cant seem to find any casting numbers on the head either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance....
By the way this engine was istalled years ago in a 1968 or 69 Checker Aero Bus limo.... It sat in the junk yard for over 20 years. if fired up after i was able to get some fuel to it!!!

Where the sources have a descrepancy is what V8 was used. One site claims Chevrolet smallblock, but the other shows a Chrysler 318, and has an oriiginal spec chart to prove it. I'm inclined to think that the engine you have was not original to the car, and just based on the description, it is most likely a Ford, but i would not rule out AMC either. The center bolt rocker cover rules out Chevrolet. Do you have a pic?

The rear fold-down jump seats were also removed as they failed all safety tests. The car had very poor gas mileage as the tall front end and engine compartment had been designed for a Continental 226 cubic inch inline 6, which required the large engine compartment. In 1964 Checker no longer used engines produced by Continental. Continental had been losing money on each unit sold to Checker for several years, Checker was not interested in a price increase from Continental. Checker experimented with several engine options including the Chrysler 318. Eventually Checker went to a Chevrolet straight six. That engine, along with an optional Chevrolet V-8 were used until the late 1970s. | | | | | Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 Wrench Fetcher | | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Sep 2009 Posts: 66 | Are you sure the number is EPB 6015 H? If it is EBP 6015 H you have a ferd engine... from what I can find | | | | | Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2006 Posts: 506 | Yep, EBP-H is listed as a 1957-60 foord 223 engine.

It dosent look like the 240 ford I have in my 67 step side. Everything is on the oposite sides!! I was going off of others input.. it being a chevy??? The Checker Aero bus is so ugly its cool. later down the road I might put a diffretn engine in it. But for now i need to find out what it is so I can get a better carb and fuel pump for it. Like I said it ran but The gas tank was full of hay from sitting so long with out a gas cap. I do have a stove bolt that came out of a 39 chevy truck. Ill have to look at those numbers just incase any one is interested.

The motor I have in question has the intake and exhaust on the drivers side.
