Will the new generation 18 inch radial tires work on the older 18 inch wheels from the 50's?

Most likely not.
Two considerations, first you need the proper rim width recommended for the tire, the new tires are generally wider than old ones and may not fit the old narrow wheels.

More importantly tube type rims have a different angle where the tire meets the rim, (5 degrees I think?) And tubeless rims usually have a 15 degree angle (I think?). Whatever the angle is your rim needs to match what the tire is designed for.

Here is some info on wheel and tire options.

For a 1 ton with dual wheels I'd run the commonly available 19.5" wheels as found on many step vans, and 8R19.5 tires.
But if you prefer the originals will be fine if in good shape..
