Below is a copy of a message I recently sent to Randy concerning a correction to his bed mounting instructions posted in the Stovebolt Tech Tips. Also, here is a link to a photo in the 1936 chevrolet yahoo group showing the steel brackets which provide the bed support at the rear of the 34-36 chevy pickup beds:

Randy, I own two 1936 chevy pickups with original bed and bed wood. in both cases the bed mounting differs slightly from your description for 1936-46 trucks in the Stovebolt tech tips. in both of my trucks, all 6 mounting bolts go completely through the bed wood and have exposed carriage bolt heads visible in the bed. the two forward bolts go through the forward cross member near the cab and wooden blocks as you describe, but they are not hidden. second pair of bolts go through the cross member and mounting blocks aft of the rear axle. final pair of bolts do not go through blocks at all, instead they go through the bed wood and fasten directly into the steel brackets that are bolted to the rear cross member. this is the special cross member that is visible beneath the tailgate. I think the same bed mounting scheme would apply to 1934 - 1936 trucks, since all of these trucks had exactly the same bed setup with the little offset in the bed sides to allow clearance for the shock absorbers. not sure about years after that. Mark-K sells very good reproductions of the 1934-36 beds including the correct rear cross member with brackets, etc. The exception is that the Mar-K reproduction bed sides are straight and do not have the little offset. but Mar-K does sell replacement angle strips that have the offset. hope this helps.
cheers, John Lupton
