Anyone know if a '58 235 head will fit the 1st serries '54 261 block and will the '54 water pump work?

Yes - that head should work on a 54 261. The pump will work with any head you put on that engine. The fact that the pump is higher than the later models makes no difference.

ROUGIE I'm not sure but you might need to drill some holes in the 235 head to match the ones in the 261 block, As the 261 has holes between each cyl on the top of the block. check the head gasket smile
