This is my 1965 GMC forward control. I bought it on Saturday. I paid $241.00 for it and $350.00 to have it towed home about 50 miles. A little about the truck.
1965 GMC Forward Control equipment truck. GVW 20,000lbs. Some huge V6. 2speed rear. It use to have tandem rear axles, but that was removed at some point. My plans are to get it running and driving and use it to tow anything I want. Anything you guys care to share about my new truck would be great.
Hy 1965FC, welcome, yes your truck is a "Big Bolt". It probably has a 351 in it for power, it certainly has a loong deck on it. I've been looking for a good cab for one of those for a long time, good luck with yours.
hello 65fc that is a cool truck all right wow a v6 cheap for the truck, not sure about the tow but you will have fun with that, show us a shot of it after the pressure washer hits it!Still see them running around here on the island!timbuk
I think I got a decent deal on the tow. Hundred dollar hookup and 4 dollars per mile. Most places charge $200 hourly for a heavy duty tow truck portal to portal. Probably would have cost me 400-600 going that route.
I'll be washing it tomorrow. so I'll post some more pictures then. I'm really excited to get it going again and get some shots of it with my 1972 k5 blazer on top of it. thanks for the compliments. Not many of my real world friends understand the "need"
65fc i know all about the need-i have a yardfull of needs!Get that baby on the road and lets hope thats it for tows-except the ones you are doing! timbuk
Interesting old beast, would look a bit more natural with that other axle I bet. I'd bet your neighbors love you right about now too. Looks like it will be fun to tinker with.
I dig all cars, old and new, whether they were hammered out of American iron, German steel, or Japanese tin cans. Being unable to appreciate them all is missing out on a world of great things. But thats just MY opinion! :P
That 305 will have plenty of power, especially with the 2-Speed Rear that you have. I'm guessing you only have a 4-Speed trans but along with the 2-Speed you will have 8 gears to use.
Also if you want more power and if it only has single exhaust now, add duals. Make sure you use straight-thru mufflers as these V-6 engines like to breathe. The straight-thru mufflers were also factory original.
Keep us posted.

Well it's good to see another 1960 to 72 cabover owner on here. I think there are 1 or 2 others now besides myself. How long is that deck on your truck?
Welcome aboard I own a 1972 GMC 9500 72" Steel Cabover with a V-8 637 cu. Steve
Your truck is actually a GMC 4000 series "L" model Tilt Cab. Check out this link, http://www.6066gmcguy.org/Lmodel.htm The GMC "P" model trucks, were called Forward Control.

I was checking that site out earlier, Lots of information. In my experience when you drive from in front of the engine that is a forward control design. I didn't realize that GM made a model known as the forward control. sorry for the confusion

good to know there are a few. The deck is 25ft 8 inches
Yep, for many years G.M. has called the "P" series chassis the Forward Control units. Listed as such in the Operator, Parts, & Maintenance Manuals. The "P" series Forward Control chassis were usually fitted with Step Van, or mini School Bus bodies.

I think I saw you post on the HAMB with this truck. You'll find the truck fits in better here, but I'm sure those guys will be happy to let you haul stuff!

I pumped out the gas tanks today. The old gas looked like coffee. I'm going to drop them and clean them. Until then I'll have to run it from a boat tank. I cleaned up the points today and after I poured some gas down her throat she fired up! I need a new carburetor for sure. the throttle plate bushings are shot. It's a Bendex Stromberg WW series carb. they were used from the 50's into the 70's on a lot of gm products from what I've read. Does any one know what else will fit? I've heard a holley 500 is a good replacement.
Well, I got another carb and rebuilt it. Put it on along with a new fuel pump and she runs!
Also I bled the brakes and the brakes work now! I'm still working on the clutch, I'm getting fluid, but it's not working yet. I'll get some pictures soon.
Matthew the wheels are 22.5 I would have to check the tire size. They are painted silver.
I've just joined Stovebolt a few days ago after I purchased a 1951 Chevy 6400. I found this posting while looking around.
I also have a 1969 GMC 4000 COE. Nice to see that this truck is welcome on this forum as well! Guess I'll have to look around to see what other info is out there....
Nice rig & good to have another member from the PNW. What is the letter designation behind the 305, i.e. 305E. Does it have a 4 or 5 speed transmission? BC
