I have the original 235 in my 55.1. We rebuilt the engine 2 winters ago. I am getting an oil leak that seems to be in the front of the engine, low down. What are the likely sources of the leak. Thanks - Scott

I have seen small knock in or knock out plugs, like a small freeze plug, used to seal the oil galley at the front of the engine. These type of plugs are a possible source of a leak because they are not threaded plugs. These plugs will present some oil leakage directly above the front cross member. At the other end of the oil galley, they can also cause some oil leakage at inside the bell housing.

Mine was leaking around screws that fasten down the timing gear cover. You need to pull those screws out and seal the threads, I used teflon paste type, cured the problem.

That same oil galley goes down the left side of the block from front to back and has another plug at the back. There could be some leakage of oil there, but if your getting oil and water, I'd say the head gasket may be leaking at the rear of the head and that oil and water could be running down the back of the block into the fly wheel cover.

FYI Jim Carter sells a sleeve to correct a leaking crankshaft front seal.
