Then rig up a pointer out of wire or something, and get it pointing to zero when #1 cylinder is at TDC. Then rig up a dial indicator on on one of the valves for your #1 cylinder.
Then you get the specs for your camshaft. Rotate the engine by hand until your valve (intake or exhaust...shouldn't matter)starts to open. Check your spec's to see at what degree of crankshaft rotation your valve is supposed to start opening or closing.
It should be fairly accurate....but IMO it would just be easire to take the timing cover off

Looks like my valve timing is off. I'm sure I set the gears correctly; is the timing gear different between a 235 and a 261? Did I use the wrong gear? | | | | | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 319 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 319 | Found this 1960 truck shop manual online a couple of weeks ago. Covers 235/261 engine specs and overhaul. Shows different specs and method for checking 235 and 261 timing. No mention of different timing gears in manual (p. 8-25 and 8-26) Might be something useful for you if you don't already have a manual like this. http://www.canadianmilitarypattern.com/1960%20235-261%20Engine%20Manual.htm
