If I put the clutch in, the whine stops. When I restored the truck I took the carrier assembly completely out to clean things up. When I reinstalled it I used a dial indicator to set the lash according the shop manual. Is it likely that I did something wrong adjusting the carrier bearings? Or could this whine be caused by incorrect shimming of the pinion? The shop manual shows a special angled tool for reaching into the housing to measure the clearance, but I had no idea where I would ever find one of those so I didn't check it. This truck goes into an auction in August, so I need to get this fixed. Help!! | | |

There should be no up-down play. Pull the cover & try to move the ring gear & carrier side to side. There should be no play there either. Get some gear marking compound & check the gear contact paterns. Compare it to the shop manual chart. If it is not right move the carrier in or out by loosening the adjuster on one side & tightening on the other. Keep experimenting till you get the best pattern than snug the adjusters up & put the locks back in. The amount of backlash is not important unless it is way out of spec.

1-Ring gear & pinion adjustment too loose.
2-Pinion bearings rough.
3-Excessive end play in pinion.
So from reading your post I would have to go cause #1. Let us know what you find.
