If I put the clutch in, the whine stops. When I restored the truck I took the carrier assembly completely out to clean things up. When I reinstalled it I used a dial indicator to set the lash according the shop manual. Is it likely that I did something wrong adjusting the carrier bearings? Or could this whine be caused by incorrect shimming of the pinion? The shop manual shows a special angled tool for reaching into the housing to measure the clearance, but I had no idea where I would ever find one of those so I didn't check it. This truck goes into an auction in August, so I need to get this fixed. Help!!

There should be no up-down play. Pull the cover & try to move the ring gear & carrier side to side. There should be no play there either. Get some gear marking compound & check the gear contact paterns. Compare it to the shop manual chart. If it is not right move the carrier in or out by loosening the adjuster on one side & tightening on the other. Keep experimenting till you get the best pattern than snug the adjusters up & put the locks back in. The amount of backlash is not important unless it is way out of spec. They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing. 1972 Chevy c10 Cheyenne SuperIn the Gallery Forum

So from reading your post I would have to go cause #1. Let us know what you find.

I would go over there and snoop around and if you could convince him to take a ride I bet he could tell you exactly where the noise is from and give you a quote to fix it if you wanted. http://www.patricksantiquecars.com/ Curt B.
