1954 was the last year to used the high mount water pump with a small pulley. The balancer also has a smaller pulley than 1955 and later.

You can have one rebuilt by Damper Doctor, but it ain't cheap. Another option is to adapt a small block balancer, but it takes some know-how to get the correct pulley setup and revise the timing marks to work properly.

How can you check a balancer and know for sure if it is needing attention ? I am rebuilding this engine and do not want to take any short cuts. I think i will get some prices from doctor dampner, maybe they can check it.
pre '68 dave - do you have what i am looking for ?

A small block damper will sorta bolt on if ya can deal with the pulley situation.But it's "tuning" is well beyond the rpm range of most old 6's
Any 50 year old used damper is well beyond it's lifespan,the rubber gets hard or oil soaked and doesn't do it's job any longer.No big deal for seldom driven low speed engine.But for engines built up turning higer rpm's,well,why spend $$$ on a buld up only to bolt some stone age damper on the front?
Lots of mysterious things can happen from an old damper,premature bearing wear,crankshaft cracks,loose flywheels. | | |
