I though these were cab marker/clearance lights, but I'm not sure since there isn't any obvious way to mount them. Anyone know for sure what they are?
Thanks!

I don't, but I have three very similar lights that are individuals each on its own "L" bracket. One has red glass lens and another has amber. the third plastic, could be either color, it is cracked and faded really bad.

You see those lights on alot of '46, & earlier trucks. Were used as clearance lights on trucks, & trailers. I have two of them myself.

I don't know what their origional intended use was. I have seen them used on big trucks with red lenses on the rear of the tractor between the rear wheels on the frame and with amber lenses on the bottom of the front bumper. I have also seen them used on the bottom of mud flaps and the rear of boat trailers with red lenses.
Looks like mounting is at each end. I can't see a screw hole so I guess they had a small bracket at each end that covered the end tabs and had 2 screws each.

Those are cab clearance lights that mount as an assembly. As I remember, there was an 'L' bracket that attached to each end, and was then attached to the cab roof. Do you have any more hardware with the setup? The last time I looked at one of those setups was sometime in 1968 when I replaced a set with individual lamps (on a '52 flatbed).

Up until 1988, states regulated lighting on trucks operating within each particular state. Texas for example required 2 marker amber marker lights on the top of each truck over 80" wide. The ICC regulated vehicles engaged in interstate commerce. Effective March 1989, all vehicles manufactured had to have 3 marker lights on top not over 12" apart nor less than 6" apart. At some point in time, all vehicles regardless of date of manufacture were required to comply. The 3 bar lights were a cheap way to retrofit and they are still available. There is no recommended way of attachment. Anything from pop rivets to sheet metal screws to machine bolts has been used. I have owned trucks for over 45 years and I cannot remember them not being around.

crenwelge,

What size trucks? Would this apply to a 54/55 350 GMC COE (2-ton; non air-brakes; 92" wide bed)?

Thanks,
Tim

here in BC, the requirements specify a "truck tractor" or "a vehicle with an overall width of 2.05m [80"] or more, or a trailer or semitrailer having a gross weight in excess of 1,400 kg" must display clearance lamps, one at each corner [amber front, red rear], or as near as possible, and "commercial vehicles" may display 3 identification lamps, near the top, front and back, no position spec stated, but they're always as cren sez, 6-12" apart in the middle

folks get confused about those cab lights, the outside ones are the "clearance lights" req by law, the middle 3 are "marker [or ID] lights", any on the side are "side-marker" lights - they serve to identify the size and position of larger trucks at night or in poor visibility and really shouldn't be positioned any way other than as specified

Tim, all trucks over 80" built after December 25, 1968 must meet this.
This covers almost all vehicles that are feasible to use commercially. However, trucks built before Dec 25,1968 must meet the safety standards at the time they were built. My interpretation of this is that the lights that your truck came with have to work. Who would be to say what was required when your COE was built.
