| | | | Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 24 Apprentice | | Apprentice Joined: Aug 2009 Posts: 24 | I took out the water pump out of my '56 engine 235 inline 6 because I suspected that this was where the water leak was coming from. There's a lot of rust around the bottom hole which probably means it had been leaking for awhile. The engine hasn't been fired up for almost 4 years except for a brief few minutes in early and mid 2006 inside a convention center. Reasons are you can't have more than 1/2 gallon of fuel in the tank inside a convention hall and it doesn't have an exhaust pipe or muffler.
After taken out the water pump I can see a lot of rust attached to the center wall of the block. Can this be cleaned without taking the engine apart? Is there a way to loosen up this rust and flushing it out?

Plain water will cause corrosian so you need to run good coolant. I would think that I probably should run it idle and flush the radiator and repeat the process a few times until I'm confident enough that most of that rust was flushed out. It doesn't look like any coolant has been through there in awhile. Do you think that the rust may get trapped in the radiator?

If you're seeing a lot of crusty rust in the block with the hoses off or with the water pump off you need to give it a real, good flushing and probably wouldn't hurt while your cleaning out the block to get the radiator into a shop and have them flush and test it. I would say that would be particularly important in the part of the country that you live in.
