If it's a dry element, you're going to need to get a new one, as soaking them in any liquid will destroy them.

If it's an oil bath type, use kerosene of Diesel fuel to wash the fiber packing, let it drip dry, and reassemble it with fresh oil to the proper level in the reservior.
