At 65mph its running at like 3500 rpm. I'm looking for a change that will allow me highway driving. But i'm looking for bolt on. I don't want to make drive train changes. So is it best to change the gear ratio or get a different transmission. Long term i want the engine to have about 500hp. So i need a transmission that is good for that but still usable as a daily driver. Someone told me the 700 is what i should start with since it has the overdrive. But can i just bolt those on to a 350. I dont know how it all works. Any help would be muchly appreciated. You have to change the carrier also. For example 3 series gears such as a 355 wont fit a 4 series carrier such as a 410. We have a powerglide equipped 66 that we converted from 410,s to 308,s. Fizer, for what it is worth, I was in the same situation with my 1966 C-10. It had a Turbo 350 behind the 327, and factory 3.73:1 gears in the rear. With 225/70R15 Dunlops all the way around, I was buzzing 3600rpm on the tach trying to keep up with traffic.
I put a 1992 spec 700R-4 automatic overdrive transmission in my truck, and switched to 245/60R15 BFG's. Made all the difference in the world. Now, in 4th gear(overdrive) with the torque converter locked up, I am turning 2300rpm at 55mph. Much better.

There is a company that sells a small control box (for lack of better words) that allows the 700 to work like it's still in the original truck including an adapter at the speedo.
